Berichtonderwerp:  More about UK Sportsters

Hi everyone.

In answer to a couple of things I've been asked about the UK, Sportsters are popular here; they're the biggest selling Harley 'class', or certainly have been over the last few years. Maybe the reasons are;
1) They're (to be honest about it) the least expensive in the Harley range
2) Newbies think of them as an 'entry-level' Harley, mistakenly in my opinion
3) Sportsters are suited to our country roads, being relatively light and manouverable, very much in the UK tradition of building motorcycles (even though we don't anymore :( )
I like to think (and hope) that the third reason is probably the most important. Certainly the folk who really take to Sportsters (like me) seem to keep them.
Talking of keeping Sportsters, here's a photograph of the 50th Anniversary Sportster Challenge that I promised.

See if you can spot me in the picture! As a matter of fact I'm about half-way down the left-hand line of bikes, behind and to the right of the pretty girl in the white T-shirt (Sue from Manchester). Turned out she owned a brand-new Sportster, the one just in front of my own machine. It was a great day out with a barbeque and rock band, though I had to leave before the rideout which wound its way through the Peak District, the range of hills to the south of my own Yorkshire Dales. And now as a special treat here's a photograph of yours truly wearing the Anniversary T-shirt - don't look if you're of a sensitive disposition!

Well, that's more than enough of me for anyone. Just hope that we can get some better weather for the rest of the summer. Don't know what it's like in the Netherlands, but over here it's been cool and wet for most of June - we've even got a ground frost forecast for next week!

As ever, Ride Safe,
Ian

P.S. Just remembered in time, someone asked about Sportster prices here in the UK. This is a listing I took off a dealer website. Don't forget it's in English Pounds!

Thanks Ian,

The prices are better then in Holland.

In the solid versions we are paying abouth £ 800 more for a 883 Basic, for a 1200 roadster £ 1040 more and £ 1285 more for a 1200 custom

Hi Dutchman,

Jeez I thought we had it bad. The Harley catalogue seems to simply translate Dollars into Pounds... All the same, the pound is doing pretty well at the moment, I guess that's the reason for the good exchange rate. Doesn't help our internal economy though - the interest rates are going up and playing hell with my mortgage :x
Ah well, what the hell. Will keep you posted if we have any major changes over here in the UK,

Ride Safe,
Ian
