Hi again all,

Sorry I didn't get to see anyone at the Ace Cafe bash last weekend. Have to admit I was only there a couple of hours in the morning before going down to Wimbledon to stay with a mate of mine and his wife and kids that I haven't seen for years, and a good time was had by all, really enjoyed it, thanks Mike and Emma. But before that, on Saturday afternoon, it was off down to Warrs in a good cause, to pick up the following piece of kit for the XR q17
Afbeelding
Had the lads fit it for me so I could test it out on the run back up the M1 on Sunday. Really pleased with it too; Harley have got the dimensions spot-on for taking just enough wind-blast off your chest to allow fast-ish (80-90mph) sustained speeds if you have to take the motorway routes - and as (hopefully) I intend to put some real mileage on this bike, I'll be doing just that. If the credit crunch hasn't put petrol out of reach to everyone but gold-based millionaires anyway! Things are getting scary here in the UK, sure you folks are feeling it too. Incidentally, the screen is the only accessory from Harley I'll be fitting (so far at least), don't like the rack and bumstop at all (apologies to any XR owners who've put these on q11 ). I'm more thinking along the lines of new pipes - a must - like I've said. More and more tempted by the Remus stainless headers with the black and stainless-capped muffler (without baffles of course!). I admit the 2-into-1 looks a little too Jap-bike inspired - my initial thought was just to fit the slash-cut mufflers - but those satin pipes are already showing some wear (and rust - tut-tut Harley q10 ). Not to worry, am going to wait until next year anyway, get winter over.
Got to go now, here's another pic of the screen taken from the rider's end. Hope you like it, would definitely recommend it if you're planning any serious mileage. And it is (reasonably) quickly detachable too, mounts with a nifty pair of brackets, so you could whip it off for posing round town q6

hi ian,

that's a nice screen. i like the dotted underside. looks great!

does it give a good wind protection in upright position, or just when you're down on the gastank?

someday i'll go to the ace cafe! evry biker must have been there once! x26

Hi again people,

Chief - to be honest my old arms don't often bend enough to let me down to the gas tank anymore q6 The 'bars on the XR don't really encourage it anyway. I was talking about the airstream when sitting more or less upright, at least just leaning forward a bit. The wind still hits your helmet, but that doesn't bother me with mine; after a fair bit of experimentation I've settled on open-face Arai's. The screen gets rid of just enough of the blast so that you don't notice the mileage at high motorway speeds - I'm not keen on motorways anyway, but if you need to get to places in a hurry...
The Ace Cafe's fun, though they trade very much on nostalgia (of course). I picked up a good patch (and badge) for the anniversary - sorry the pic isn't up to much.Afbeelding

Charles - love the bikes! I'm sure that one on the link page (with the Termiglioni exhaust) is the one they show at Adrenalin Moto. Anyway, lots of ideas - just need the cash! q16 Will see how things are next year. First thing for certain is the valve to come out of the airbox, which is supposed to make a fair bit of difference (i.e. you actually notice) to the performance, but have been discussing this with a few mates (and our local dealer) and looks like remapping the EFI is a wise move. Don't want the engine running lean, even with the oil cooler it's hot-running enough as it is already. Surprisingly the Leeds Harley staff were ahead of me on this and were quite happy about it; they knew about the mod in some detail and even offered to get the electrics in, but like I said I'm waiting until next year anyway. Just got a toolroll (can't do without it!) and some soft luggage on order at the moment, so the hard stuff will have to wait q13

Ride Safe,
Ian

Fantastic! Some great pics. But as winter approaches q10 - well, not for a little while q16 -at least I can dream about next year's kit for the bike. After much thought I rather like these:Afbeelding Very much in the Harley tradition, I think. Seems like they're Remus mufflers that slip onto the standard system. And they come in chrome too, so I reckon (at this point in time anyway) that I might have the polished chrome pair and then have the exhaust shielding on the rest of the system professionally powdercoated in satin black. Something like that anyway! Will keep you informed,

Ride Safe,
Ian

Dear All,

Thanks for all the replies here. Some great stuff coming in, really good of you people following things up, much appreciated.

brandweervrouw/Karin - interesting point about the tyres, all the more so because of something I noticed on my own XR. I ride more like Max Bygraves than Max Biaggi these days q1 (too much to lose; blood/limbs/licence etc etc) but even so, you know those little rubbery stalks that come on new tyres? Well, all of them appear to have worn off my back tyre out to the edge completely, but on my front tyre there's still a line of them at the very edge. Conclusion - I must be leaning the bike further over at the back than at the front!?! q115 Seriously, I think it's a question of different profiles, looking at the tyre widths. Guess the riders in the photos get right down at the front too, as you pointed out. Glad you like black, of course will keep posting pics as things develop.

Jekill & Hyde - WRONG COLOR!!! q8 - q16 Ok, admit you have a point here - I was seriously tempted to go for the black bike (love the one in the pic), but when I saw the pewter finish I liked that as well. Finally decided on the orange, partly for tradition but also because I think the orange contrasts well against the black fittings. Even the black plastic panels are growing on me - though I may replace them with black carbon-fibre, together with the belt guards/mudguard as well. Was going to have a custom-painted fibreglass seat too (more of which later), but having second thoughts about that - need to carry kit about to the rallies. Incidentally on your website I thought the adjustable noise-level pipes on the 'example' Dyna were absolutely beautiful - is there a set for the XR? Apologies if I've just missed them on the website, I'll have a good look around shortly.

Ride Safe,
Ian

Re Jekyll & Hyde - quick thanks folks, hadn't realised the pipes in the original pic were those adjustable models, can see clearly now from behind. They look absolutely brilliant. Have to do some serious thinking now about options! Still, there are worse things to think about during winter - keep me going until spring q17
