Hi folks!

OK, so I'm skint. No money to spare. Times are hard. What is there to do? Sell the kids, send the wife back on the streets, and spend the money on the Sportster of course! q7

Well, actually I got seduced, in a way, by this big guy up at the Best Chapter Rally In The World, the 'Thunder In The Glens' held by Dunedin Chapter up at Aviemore in Scotland. I think I mentioned that no matter how short of cash I was, I wasn't going to miss it. This year it was better than ever. Met up with a bunch of my own Aire Valley people too, there should be some pics on their website soon. Anyway, there's always a load of trade stands ranging from the big Edinburgh dealership down to little tents selling rocks and crystals, you know the kind of thing. One of the stands this year was for Dash Custom, the guys who make carbon-fibre kit as supplied by Adrenalin-Moto, among others. I say 'the guys', it's actually one guy, Dave, who set up in business himself with the compensation he received after being injured as an engineer in the construction industry. A great bloke, he was there with his missus and his daughter. As you can guess, I wandered into the tent just take a look around and eventually came out again with - the following...

Here's the obvious bits. Goodbye EPA-approved Harley cans, hello custom-built carbon-fibre echo chambers. As a matter of fact, the most amazing thing about them (even though it's obvious if you think about it) was the difference in weight. With the Dash pipes in a bag, you can hold them up easily with your little finger. Carrying the Harley pipes back to my room at the Highland resort, I had to keep changing arms, they were so damn heavy. As for the sound; must post a sound file for you. They have removable baffles (single Allen screw, easy) which I've, er, removed. And finally, you can feel the difference in the performance; I didn't think the XR was too bad regarding ability to rev, but now the needle just soars up from say 4000 or so, just got to be careful not to blow it up I suppose... Just for the record, the mid-range is actually rather better with the baffles in place (as confirmed by Dave) but dammit, I just like the sound. I think the baffles will stay out. q6

Next bit - yeah, it's a sticker. But it has got the Pipercross foam air filter behind the cover instead of the original Harley paper affair. One minor gripe here; dumb bit of design by Harley, you have to remove the tank cover to access the top of the airbox so that you can get to the air filter. I've seen it done now so I'm OK for cleaning and the like, but it's still a fiddly business, you have to remove four of the Allen screws around the filler cap and prise the cover apart (carefully) to be able to lift the thing, for those who haven't seen it. You don't have to actually lift the tank proper i.e. disconnect the pipes, but I reckon it could still have been done better at the design stage.

Last bit, lots of flashing lights (when running) from the Kitech fueller. Bit out of my depth here, there's loads of adjustments (if you want them) for various stages of the engine performance, and you do get a small handbook with it, but mine's just set with the factory defaults. Seems to work OK!

So there we go, just got to explain to the kids why they won't be getting any Christmas presents this year. Next bits - which definitely won't be too soon, but that's what I said about the pipes - maybe a pair of gas adjustable shocks, haven't really made up my mind yet. Can't decide about the bodywork either, whether to go down the full carbon-fibre route, despite having paid the premium for the orange paintwork. Still, it'll do for now. q4
